When I first started karate at Ambra Karate Academy, I was in third grade. Now that I’m in high school, I realize how much karate has impacted my life. At first, I was really quiet and when I joined, I promised myself to at least make it to an orange belt. Over time, I made some friends (my best friends) and just never quit. Now I’m a black belt! At times, it got difficult, but I kept trying. I have to say, though, I’d still be back at the beginning if it weren’t for the patience Mr. Ambra and all the other people around me had. Being of a technical, scientific background typically writing audit reports and for chemistry books or journals, I am more accustomed to presenting facts and making logical conclusions rather than writing an essay about myself. I write this after the test, so it will be somewhat biased, however, I think the difference will be minimal as I have not yet received the belt….
The Meaning of Black Belt to Me
Upon hearing of the requirement to write this essay, I started by thinking of a suitable title… “My Black Belt”, “Finally There”, “My Black Belt and Me”, or “Pain, Suffering, and Rewards”, but none of them were close to describing what this event meant to me. But how could they? How could a single title describe how martial arts has shaped my life for the past years? And then it struck me; that that is exactly what the black belt is. It is the end of the new, and the beginning of the old; it is the start of a journey just finished; it is a marker of past experience, and a gateway of things to come.
Not sure how many of you read this, but I thought I’d put something up today, in light of the big test this Saturday.
Those of you that are testing for your black-belts: Don’t. Worry.
I know that the first test is always the worst, and its much different than anything you’re used to. But its not something to be afraid of. This is the one time, where you should stand up and just tackle it head on. Figuratively of course. You will do just fine. Believe in yourself.
Discipline! This simple word means so much to each person’s life. It is an essential ingredient to education, work, martial arts and any other pursuit that one takes on. It is also the hallmark of a Black-Belt martial artist. The belt is a symbol of the individuals discipline to training, respect and understanding of the art itself. Continue reading →
